The year is 1922 and young Dani Creppuscio, the son of a respected Mafioso, finds himself in the midst of a bloody interfamily conflict in his native Sicily during the prelude to a time of great upheaval of time-honoured ways as the Fascist government of Benito Mussolini begins its crack-down of the Sicilian Mafia.

A river whose flow consists of the blood of his friend threatens to drag him down with it, but Dani grabs a paddle and attempts to navigate out of it and into the safe harbour of a foreign land. But the harbour thousands of miles away, the goal of his pilgrimage, is all but safe.
