Aziza Jafarzade (1921–2003) is one of Azerbaijan’s most prominent authors, best known for her historical novels. In Baku 1501, she vividly portrays the rise of Shah Ismail Safavi (1488–1524), founder of the Safavid dynasty, and a complex figure who was both ruler, warlord, and poet.
